pretty mommy
One of my favorite blogs is pretty mommy, somehow I think we live a parallel life, we like the same things, she lives in minnesota, and well.. you just know when you like the same things! Pretty Mommy's name is Michelle - so what I don't give you in the way of dreams, design and terrific images you can certainly get your fill from Michelle - PRETTY MOMMY!
Recently she had a wonderful post and part of it was a few photos of the Lennon family (John, Yoko and sean) together with a quip that john made about playing with your kids that I thought was interesting. (I don't know if you saw this article on John Lennon in Rolling Stone but it looks good)
Mostly Michelle will just give you inspiration on how to look great, live great and have fun while you are doing it! Her husband is a musician so that helps too, from time to time she will give you a music tip that is just sublime!
Have a great day!

interview: kenneth slawenski "J.D. Salinger"
Just in case you missed it today on The Diane Rehm Show (on NPR), Diane interviewed Kenneth Slawenski who wrote, "Salinger A Life" which will be coming out this month. This interview is wonderful if you are a "Catcher In The Rye" fan. I love Diane Rehm and rarely miss her show so it was doubly wonderful to have her interview this man. At the same time, Kenneth seems to be such a sensitive author/biographer, who was deeply touched by "Catcher". Like so many people, "Catcher" changed my life, it changed my life as far as literature and it also changed it in the sense that I completely taken away Holden and how he questioned the world.
I also read the book again last year when I heard that Mr. Salinger passed away and I had a completely different reaction to the book. I am sure that if I read it again in another ten years I will feel different again, it's why this book is loved by so many people. It will certainly change your life.
It's fascinating to hear more about the history behind the book and more about the mystique behind the man. It answers so many questions that I had and I hope that it does the same for you. I am excited for this book to come out and it's delightful to bring this book to the forefront again.

mary hartzell - on GOOP!
I am a big fan of GOOP! and I have shared some of my favorite GOOP blogs here from time to time. If you don't already get her weekly newsletter, I promise you if you like my blog you will enjoy GOOP as well. Today I received her newsletter which is an interview with Mary Hartzell, co-author of "Parenting From The Inside Out". Even if you are completely happy with your parenting skills I promise you, you will learn something from her interview. And if you are not, you will be enlightened (if you are ready for it) to a paradigm shift in the way that you deal with difficult situations with your kids. And well, it just makes more sense.
I like to think that I am a 'nonchalant mom' but the scenario that she describes about getting to school on time is just what was happening in our house last year, unfortunately we went down the wrong path for a long time before I involved my son in making the whole morning routine better. We have never spoken about it again and our mornings are completely happy and sometimes a race 'together' to get to school on time, but we are laughing our way through it.
Reading Mary's conversation on GOOP has opened the door to bringing this kind of problem solving into our lives more and more, and instead of upset I am excited about the opportunity to work things through with my kids.

pop pop portraits
I have been trying to come up with something new for valentines day as I always tell you to make the photo-cards, which I love, but I wanted to come up with something new... and then I found pop pop portraits! I honestly just found her today, via Decor 8, her name is Helena and her code name is pop pop portraits. She is on etsy and I just wanted to pass it on right away because if you DO want to do these for valentines day you need to get on it right away! I think it's about $75 for one person, she can do multiple people but you need to email her and get a price.
I think this is a darling idea, great for kids, and would make such a cute valentines card or gift!
Happy Valentines Day (it's coming sooner than you think!)

Wal-Mart has chosen to be a leader in affordable good food for families
Michelle Obama, the first lady, has joined the company's effort to get consumers to eat healthier foods. |
The New York Times today reported that Wal-Mart is making big changes in their food offering, what a welcome idea! In an article entitled "Wal-Mart Shifts Strategy to Promote Healthy Foods", Wal-Mart who is the biggest supplier of groceries in the United States, has pledged it's force behind the idea that Americans should be eating healthier foods. They should be eating foods that are lower in sodium and what I love best about the plan is that it has offered to lower prices on fruits and vegetables, enticing people to eat whole foods rather than processed foods. They have also stated that the price decrease will come from the Wal-Mart end and not from the farmer, hoping to sell more volume to make up for the lower price.
Michelle Obama has gotten behind Wal-Mart by attending the press conference to announce the plan, this is the first time that Mrs. Obama has thrown her support for a single company. Which for me, lends credibility to the whole plan. The announcement is a long-term plan that will reduce the amount of sodium in the Wal-Mart house brand, as well as lowering trans fats and added sugars. Apparently, this decision was driven by the customer who was asking why is it that the foods that are better for you cost more? Customers shouldn't have to pay more to feed their family in a better way -- sounds so obvious doesn't it! Wal-Mart is hoping that this will push other companies to move in the same direction.
It will be interesting to see how this all goes over, they have not yet developed the new formulations with less salt and I am sure that the average consumer will note the change in taste, but I feel that it is only a matter of time for palates to change. Hopefully the consumer will have the patience for that change and understand that it is all for the better health of the public.
Well it's about TIME!

behind your kids....
Some new parents might not know the difference, because I didn't, until it was pointed out to me by my husband. It will make your life a thousand times easier if you stay one step in front of your kids! I'll tell you how I know this... because I have done it both ways. I think that our family works like many families, at the moment my husband travels quite a bit for about two weeks at a time and this happens just about every other month or more. I can sympathize with single parents, you have to be on top of your game and if you let your guard down for a moment, DROP goes the ball and there you are trying to pick up after your kids (literally and metaphorically). But I tell you if you can stay in front of the ball it can be amazingly enjoyable and your kids are a delight... in fact, it's amazing to see them step up to the plate and help out.
The problem is that your kids are always following your lead, so you drop the ball and it's hard to get it back. Let me explain myself a bit, this whole concept came to my mind because at the moment I fell behind and I am struggling to get ahead of the ball, snow days, sicknesses, a messy house, laundry, and a business to run can all pile up if you don't take care of things every day. Last week I let the movie theater suck me in and so I lost a day at work (how does the cinema do that!?)... it hasn't been the same since! But all it takes is to recognize it and set yourself up for a catch-up day.
wake up, shower, make lunches, take kids to school, aaaahhhhh..., go running, write a blog, answer emails, (while doing laundry), clean desk (clear completely), make a to-do list, go through the list and methodically do everything! - have the evening with the kids all planned out (again, you are ahead of the ball), pick up kids... play, have fun, homework, dinner, showers, read, bed... fold laundry and GO TO BED EARLY! (that's always hard for me)... and tomorrow BOOM you are ahead of your kids! In the drivers seat again and things just get better from here on out...
It makes my life so much easier, and fun and since I am easily frustrated this makes me a much happier person to be with and things can roll off my back much easier than when I am chasing everything down. It doesn't take more coffee, it just means taking control of your day.
good luck today and plow through it like we all do!

cleanse or fast or SOMETHING...
I have BEGUN to write this blog numerous times, but I want to make sure you are getting something new out of this one and so today I figured it out... this time, I figured out my own cleanse that works well for ME and maybe YOU!
Last year my husband and I did the 'Master Cleanse' a multiple day fast (I did seven days) in which all you drink is liquid in the form of tea and at least 4 times a day you drink the lemon, maple syrup, cayenne tea (which is delicious) and then at the end of the seven days you flush everything out with a salt water gallon gulp! It's crazy but I thought it was great and I felt terrific at the end. I would love to do this again, but it was pretty intense. You need to have a good amount of low-key time and take it easy, not too much stress and sometimes its hard to find that time.
(my homemade rice cream after cooking for 5 hours) |
This year, after reading a bit about Dr. Junger's clean program which sounds great and very interesting, I thought to myself I think that I can do this on my own. I'm not a doctor or anything but I felt that I could find a 'sound' way of cleansing for 21 days that would work for me. I like the idea of a 21 day cleanse because it's not so intense and I hoped that I could be a normal person (lot's of work to do!) as I make my way through it. I am now on day 11 of my 21 day cleanse, which consists of tea, my homemade rice cream (click here for recipe here) and apples (I wouldn't really feel too bad about any fruit actually but in the winter we are kind of limited to apples around here... maybe a kiwi here or there or an orange..) for the daytime and then I eat dinner with the family, which I cook so it's usually millet or brown rice 'anything' or soup of some kind. If I am feeling hungry I have a raw almond or two.
This cleanse has been fantastic! I feel fine and with tons of energy, my eyes are so clear and I have been able to keep up with the running that I started in December (it's only a mile so it's not that big of a deal, but I love it) and then I alternate running with skin brushing 3x a week (click here to read more about skin brushing). The rice cream is a very effective way to cleanse your organs as well, and in a very gentle way. I just make sure to drink the, what I call 'tea', from top the rice cream before I go to bed and then again when I get up in the morning. Each batch of rice cream lasts me about 3-4 days (it goes bad after 4 days) if it's kept refrigerated in a glass container. I like my rice cream with adzuki puree but I just purchased Natto Miso which is slightly sweet and delicious and another great way to enjoy the rice cream, you could also top it with steamed carrots.
My teeth felt funny on the second day (something I remember from pregnancy) so I started to take a good calcium supplement (Cal-Mag bone health by New Chapter Organics). I have developed a very good selection of teas as it can get kind of boring and it's your only source of excitement in a food-way. I have also been drinking a kukicha-ume tea every once in awhile (which can almost feel like a meal).
I hope that this can be inspiring for you to do some kind of cleanse and re-start your system in some way or maybe come up with your own cleanse that works for you! If you DO come up with your own cleanse, please share it with us!!
My friend Gunn has this suggestion as a good elixir when you need one and to help with the cold and flu season. I think it sounds delicious!
Ingredients:
1 lemon
2 cm fresh ginger
1 tea spoon turmeric
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 cup or so of water
Split the lemon in half, press the juice of one and cut the other in pieces.
Mix all in a food mixer and add 4dl quality water. Mix and filter. It is fine using a tea strainer. Drink a bit before breakfast and the rest during the day.
This will give strength and energy during the winter months.

This is the view out my window at the moment... we have not even had the chance to go outside yet and slide, just a bit of shoveling. School is canceled, our road is closed... and I'm sorry but I don't think any orders are going out today!
I hope you all are enjoying yourselves outside -- in WINTER WONDERLAND!

Amy Chua's new book... eyeopening!
I am a pretty traditional parent (or maybe not?), who grew up in Minnesota, both of my parents were immigrants from Sweden in the late 1950's. Maybe this is why it interests me so much to hear about different parenting styles. Just the same as everyone else that I know we are always questioning the decisions we make as parents and wonder if we are doing the right thing.
In her new book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother", Amy Chua talks about being a chinese mother and what that really means!
"A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it. Here are some things my daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to do:
• attend a sleepover
• have a playdate
• be in a school play
• complain about not being in a school play
• watch TV or play computer games
• choose their own extracurricular activities
• get any grade less than an A
• not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama
• play any instrument other than the piano or violin
• not play the piano or violin."
(quote from article/book)
I would not suggest that I have all the answers to parenting and I do think that it helps to learn about the parenting of other cultures. I loved Amy's piece for the humor that she brings to the subject, while also giving us an idea of the decisions she made as a chinese mother, why she made them and the consequences. She doesn't just leave us hanging on her strong words to her children, she helps us to understand her reasoning.
I found the piece in the Wall Street Journal (click here to read the story) but I understand it's also in the New York Times as well... I know that it has struck some heavy debate, but I think that if you are like me it will strike interest not condemnation. And I for one, am buying the book!

I am the type of person that is always reading just a little bit at a time, it's why magazines work well for me. But this little handy device is just what I need - it keeps my books/magazines stored in the house (dust free I might add), and on top is what I am trying to get myself though at the moment (while constantly getting interrupted). 21 habits for healthy moms
(image via flickr: davekugler) |
I found this list on a website called 'Hybrid Moms' -- it's a very helpful website if you have parenting questions. I found this very true for myself and I think that these 'habits' can help you to feel more relaxed and easy-going (ie. nonchalant?!) about being a mom. I promise you I follow each and every one of these rules (well except one) and I think that they are easy to overlook but they are all important!
I would add in there, and not for every year, but take a trip away with your friend(s), this is something that I have rarely done in the past but found the beauty of it last year when I went to Paris with my friend. We had so much fun laughing and just doing whatever WE wanted to do! If you can find the time and use your 'points' or whatever and just go.... (I will show you how to do Paris (kind of) cheap... in a blog soon!). But it's all about making sure that you are happy, because if you are not I can guarantee your kids know it and why not just take care of yourself, your family will love you for it!
1. Find time for yourself
Happy moms know they deserve a little time to themselves. When you know you're going to have a little room to breathe later on in the day, it's easier to take on everything that's in front of you. Our formula? Take 2 hours out for yourself every 3 days.
2. Don't make a happy baby, happier!
We all do it...you see your baby's head at what you're sure is an unnatural angle snoozing in their car seat. You just know they'll be happier if their head was straight. So you move them. And they wake up. Then they scream. Or, you see them playing happily in the sand. You just know they'll be happier if they played on the slide. So you interrupt them and move them to the slide. And they're ppiiiiiissssssssed. And they let you know they're piiiiissssssssed. Here's the thing, they were happy. It can be hard to do, but if your kid's not complaining, leave them be! Happy baby = Happy Mommy.
3. Have sex
At least once a week. Sex makes mommies happy. Good sex makes mommies very happy.
4. Lather up
It's so easy to throw sweats on over your pajamas, go about your day, and simply remove the sweats and climb back into bed at the end of the day. Taking just 15 minutes to shower with a scented soap or body scrub and putting on fresh clothes improves your mood and changes your whole perspective on the day.
5. Embrace the mess
So your house doesn’t look like something out of a magazine. That just means it’s cozy! Your children have hands coated in dirt from the playground and faces coated in spaghetti from dinner. It’s not gross—it’s an adorable photo op! Life is about how you look at things. Next time that pile of laundry that’s been sitting on the chair for three days starts to get you down, just remember… it’s probably feng shui.
6. Don't compete and compare
The green-eyed monster has eaten away at the happiness of many a mom.
7. Watch how happy your children are—naturally
Happiness is a choice and the beauty of life is always right in front of you, in the little day-to-day things. Happy moms happen to take notice.
8. Love and respect yourself and your time
Don’t volunteer for every single activity at school. Even “super woman” had a staff and you can’t do it all.
9. Make time for your friends
Your family can survive without you while you make time to see friends. You are a woman with your own identity and its imperative that you and that identity go out for some margaritas once in awhile!
10. Laugh and be merry
Don’t be the uptight mom. Learn to laugh at your mistakes and successes. It’s okay- it’s life.
11. Move It
Exercise for your sanity not just for your waist line. When you are feeling overwhelmed by your charming but noisy brood, take a walk. It will help your mood.
12. Stop blowing yourself off
While you may be the one taking care of everyone, it doesn't mean you can't also get what you want. Help your family realize your needs are as important as theirs and when mom is happy, everyone is happy, but when mom is not....
13. Get a babysitter
We all love our kids but we need a break from them. Hire a babysitter and go out. Put your cell phone on vibrate and resist the temptation to look at your phone or to call and check in. Even if you think you can’t afford a sitter right now, find a way. Skip coffee out, dig quarters out of the couch, swap childcare with a girlfriend, do whatever it takes and hire a babysitter at least a couple times a month.
14. Lipstick and sexy underwear, oh my!
Happy moms splurge on themselves once in awhile. Treat yourself to a bouquet of your favorite flowers, an indulgent new lipstick or some sexy lingerie—and don’t feel guilty.
15. Get in the zone
Take 10 minutes to do absolutely nothing but rest. Take a break from your day, close your eyes, breath in slowly and deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Repeat several times. Think about a place you love that is relaxing, spend 10 minutes there in your mind.
16. Let it out
Set your kids in front of the television with enough snacks to keep them quiet. Go into your bedroom and cry--sometimes just giving yourself permission to cry can make you feel better. We don’t recommend pity parties on a regular basis, but everyone needs a good cry once in a while.
17. Remember your dreams and goals
Everyday we are encouraging our children to reach their full potential. But sometimes in the midst of being a parent we forget about our own dreams and goals. The best thing you can do to encourage a child is to lead by example –happy moms hold on to their dreams and goals and don’t let go.
18. Do something that's just for you
Whether it's a hobby, taking a class, or playing tennis, create a specific time for you to engage in your "thing" and make it non-negotiable (i.e. just as important as a scheduled appointment).
19. Be lighthearted
Be silly and dance with your kids to their music or tv show tunes. Be romantic and pull your partner into a waltz. Dance in slippery socks in your kitchen while making dinner.
20. Bend the Rules
One of the best parts of making the rules is occasionally breaking them. Maybe it’s taking your child out of school for half a day on their birthday, or waking them up in the middle of the night to see a sky of shooting stars. Happy moms know how to turn the mundane into fun.
21. Mind your own business
Concentrate on creating your life the way you want it. Take care of you and your family. Don’t get overly concerned with what other people are doing or saying. Don’t get caught up with gossip or name calling. Stop seeking the validation of others and be confident in yourself.

Change...
New Years Eve fondue night! |
When the New Year rolls around I am not so sure that I am into resolutions... just not that type of gal... or maybe they are too concrete, but what I like to do is make some changes in our house or in the way we are eating (or even as simple as totally changing my nighttime regime). I like to try new things and then say to myself this is what we are going to do this year. I have started with just a few food choices, but I will make my way through a few things...
1) Our family is addicted to tamari roasted almonds - so I want us to be healthier and use raw almonds, I love them, the kids don't yet but I will give them a few months...
2) We eat A LOT of brown rice, but I am switching us to millet, starting with brown rice and millet and then eventually just millet (and sometimes brown rice!)
3) Personally, I am just not going to eat so much anymore... I can live on much less food.
and so on... I'm not going to bore you with all of mine but they range from big to small... and it's fun! As I get older, and travel less, I feel like I just need to try more things and do things differently to spice up my life! (I like a spicy life!)
I hope this inspires you...
(above photo is of our New Years Eve family fondue night, it's something that my family always did as kids so we are keeping it going... I don't like to change EVERYTHING, although this year we tried to do tempura veggies... didn't work...)

Make 2011 the Year of the Vegetable!
This idea comes from Mr. George Ball, who wrote an inspiring and simple story in the Wall Street Journals Op-ed section in yesterdays paper (click here to see full article on the Burpee website). What I like about the piece, besides it being totally true and makes perfect sense, is that he calls for action by parents to get their kids interested in vegetables, it's as simple as that! Not some complicated diet, just as simple as give your kids vegetables and they will eventually like them (so true!!), let your kids grow vegetables and they will love them even more!
If you want to do something new this year why not make it the year of the vegetable for your family! Let everyone in on it and make sure you are using vegetables in each meal! Meatless mondays, a terrific idea! Give yourself the chance to make a meal surrounded by vegetables (if you want protein just add a few slices of cheese to the table or as the desert after dinner). Its a wonderful way to make sure everyone in your family is healthier and happier.
If you can bring your family to embrace and love vegetables it will be a wonderful change for you and your family. Start with this idea and then grow over the years to enjoy and taste raw food, macrobiotics, juicing, whatever direction you want to go! Start your family garden and you just watch, even if you do it by yourself everyone will get curious about it and want to join in! There is nothing funner than getting ready to make dinner and asking your kids so see what you have in the garden! So let's take this good idea, The Year of the Vegetable and run with it!
Mr. Ball is the chairman and ceo of the national gardening company Burpee. A lifelong gardener and horticulturist, Mr. Ball is a strong advocate for the benefits of gardening with children. He is credited with initiating a national children’s gardening program in 1993, along with numerous other children’s garden initiatives across the country, while President of the American Horticultural Society.

Happy New Year!
photo via my friend Gunn who is in Vietnam at the moment! visit her blog: unmomento nordico |
I have to say that while taking my kids to school today I had a bit of a smile on my face... just couldn't wait to get to work! I love the holidays and all that and especially this year since we went to see my family in Minnesota, lots of delicious Swedish goodies, but it feels so good to be back at work!
We have many many exciting things planned for the year ahead, some I can tell you about and some are still a secret! It will be hard to top 2010 as it was a fantastic year, I found out that many of you like to shop for yourselves while shopping for kids and the added womens collections were so much fun to work on and develop. I will be going to NYC in a few weeks to scope out new collections! and then later in the month is a kids show as well... we need to find some new toys (or maybe not!?... you tell me!). I love the new addition of the Jess Brown dolls but I want to find an equivalent for boys... I'm sure we can find something completely unique. We have some new collections coming in Spring that I think you are going to LOVE I am so excited about them, but don't worry we are sticking with ALL of our old favorites!
I have two new interns that will be starting to work with us at the end of January, they are both very talented and I am so happy that they wanted to come and work with Nonchalantmom. Jillian will be on board and working with me on the Nonchalant Kids collection (yes we are going to do another collection!) and Katie will be working with me on the online store, facebook, and twitter and all that new stuff! (so - so excited!!). They are both from the University of Rhode Island and please welcome them!
Many things will stay the same, but we are becoming bigger and stronger as we grow and change and find out more about what is possible for Nonchalantmom! I would love to hear any of your suggestions on what you would like to see from Nonchalantmom - I would welcome your ideas!
Happy New Year to you all and we wish you love, peace and happiness!
love - carina
