A home renovation that will blow your mind

back of home

yes, if you are like me I am always into a home renovation story - it's impossible for me to skip them but when I took a look at this one I was so impressed. It's as if they left the center of the house and then just added the surrounding outdoor spaces onto it and completely changed the entire home. I can almost picture doing this to any style home - incredibly inspiring. The story was in Dwell magazine here's the complete story.

front elevation

This home is in Austin, Texas so they needed all this outdoor space, it's really the best outdoor space I've seen in a long time. With all the time we spend on our phones etc, we need a more appealing outdoor space and this is IT.

before

after
Crazy right! The couple, two architects, really did their thinking outside of the box - as they say!

The Heat Dome

Yesterday during On Point on NPR with Tom Ashbrook (June 22, 2017) there was a fantastic discussion of the Heat Dome that has settled over the South West - with temperatures in the 125+ degrees. One man who works at the airport was working in 118 degree heat overhead and the tarmac was a stifling 180 degrees! The discussion of Climate Change has been going on for awhile, but this program was interesting because it suggested solutions that we will all have to become more aware of as time goes on. From shaded areas, which you are finally seeing more and more of in places like Las Vegas - but are also needed everywhere. It was a great discussion with Charles Redman in particular, he runs the School for Sustainability for Arizona State University, his second moniker is even more interesting: Professor at ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change - how's that for an interesting title, I don't even know this guy and I like him.

It's something that I put a lot of stock into and I think many people overlook - SHADE! I use it throughout our home and I know my family thinks I'm nuts but I have a system to keep us cool and we don't have AC. It's a series of open windows, shades, etc... The most important planning when building a home is placement of your home with regards to the sun and placement of windows and overhangs (how large or small is the overhang). Watch how cool air moves through your home and use it to keep your home cool without AC. Find the cool breeze and help it to move through your home. For instance in the morning there is almost always a cool breeze at our front door which lasts until about noon or just after, as soon as the sun hits that area I shut the door.

Your biggest helper is SHADE - our school PTO raises money year after year, and year after year I suggest trees around the playground so that there is shade on the playground, year after year everyone laughs at me - and then we end up buying more technology for the school - it's frustrating but one of these days someone is going to listen and think it's a good idea. Parking lots, why can't they have trees!? It drives me NUTS!

It's a great discussion and I for one, am happy that people are starting to think about these things. It was good to hear this program - some interesting conversations were started.

here is the link to listen to the show on NPR
and type "solar" into my search to find more things I have posted on this subject - this is not a new obsession for me, I'm constantly having this conversation.

Inner Garden :: Flower Essence Therapy - LInda Beal

Recently my 11 year old daughter has been very lackluster with regards to school, she loves school don't get me wrong, it's the learning part that she finds uninteresting. Her symptoms arrive as soon as the teacher hands out a sheet of math to work on, she zones out - sound familiar? I don't know about you but that describes myself, my husband but somehow not our son - just can't wait to attack that worksheet - who knew!? We have had teachers who had a serious concern about Franny, until they met her parents... somehow just meeting us secured the fact that it might just run in the family - DAYDREAMERS. I'm not proud of it, it certainly didn't make things easy, but I feel that if she can learn to take an interest in any aspect of school, she will be fine.

Then Linda Beal walked into my store - she changed our lives. We have used Bach's Flower Remedies over the years, I used rescue remedy during pregnancy and after for breastfeeding support (see more information on that in a previous post here) and I gave my husband (unknowingly) sweet chestnut to lift his depression and it worked. So when she told me that she works with healing with flower remedies, I lit up like a light! I knew this was the answer for Franny - to help with her focus and boredom at school.

Flower essences can help us gently release unwanted emotions and behaviors, while helping to foster our innate strengths.  Used widely in Europe for many decades, flower essences are remedies made from the blossoms of plants and trees and are taken orally in liquid dropper form or applied topically.  Within the context of Flower Essence Therapy, flower essences work subtly to affect profound change. This just speaks to the way that Franny operates, anything related to nature or a flower.

I was lucky, I also had the chance to sit down with Linda and she created a remedy for me as well. I told her that I wasn't really sure what to work on because I feel I have way too many emotional issues to focus on one. She sat me down and we went through what came up for me and it was just spot ON. Linda is a trained and experienced flower essence practitioner, she has been helping people for most of her lifetime. It is not easy to put into words but I feel less complicated, more in tune - I don't want to bore you with my problems but I feel lifted and supported, but from within.

As for Franny, she loves Linda, I think children just know when people are good for them. They sat down and had a conversation that was very comfortable for Franny, Linda uses kinesiology to find the remedy that supports each person. Franny had an immediate response when she started taking her remedy. She said she felt very 'awake' while in school and her teacher told me that Franny is participating more rigorously. We haven't had our normal stressful conversations about school and studying that we had before - which always ended in tears no matter how 'softly' you approached the subject. Her attitude now comes from a place of strength and she's not making excuses for everything.

Each person has their own remedy which Linda puts together with you while you are in your session. You look through the meanings of the flowers that pertain to your 'spirit' or constitution and you can gain wisdom on your blockages. We will probably see Linda again to adjust but for now it's exciting to see how this helps. Linda suggests that Flower Remedies can help with:

   * separation anxiety
   * shyness and social sensitivity
   * focus and concentration
   * self confidence
   * performance anxiety
   * academic overwhelm

I had the chance to sit down with Linda and talk to her about what she does. Here are some questions that I came up with for Linda to help you get familiar with the process. My favorite part about talking with Linda is that I always learn something from her, this is what a good friend is all about, you respect someone to listen deeply to them and learn from what they are saying. When Linda and I talk I find myself hanging on her every word.

CS: How do you feel diet enhances or works with the flower remedies?
LB: Because flower remedies assist us to assist ourselves, anything that brings us into greater strength, clarity, balance and alignment enhances their work. So, indeed, a diet of pure water and ample hydration, along with fresh, nutritious and anti-inflammatory whole foods provide the perfect foundation for flower essence therapy.
As with so many other things I also think of one's "diet" on various levels… In addition to being conscious about what we physically ingest, we may also being to consider what we are "feeding ourselves" and absorbing on a sensory level, an emotional level, and on an intellectual level. What are we exposing ourselves and our children to on all these levels and how "digestible" is it? Just like eating too large a meal, "too much" on various levels can truly be too much to process and lead to a feeling of sensory, emotional or intellectual overwhelm. In this way, we choose healthy and enhancing foods and "feasts for the senses", while forgoing the junk food and toxins.

CS: 2. I feel that Franny's issues were a bit subtle - how profound have you found the remedies to be on larger 'issues'?
LB: Flower remedies help us to release our own imbalances, whether subtle or more complex. Children are usually able to cast off 'issues' quite quickly. In contrast, more complex issues that stymie us have often developed over time and become more enmeshed with our sense of self and involve working with a trained and experienced flower essence therapist in a more sustained manner. Unlike some medications which attempt to alleviate the symptom(s), flower essences help us to resolve the cause and bring us back to our own self-alignment. Everyone is on their own healing journey. I love to say, flower essence therapy may feel like a "snail's pace" at times, but it is truly ones "soul's pace". You can't source it. You can't rush it. But you know when you or your child has resolved the "issue".

CS: 3. What brought you to flower remedies?
LB: My quest to find the most natural and non-intrusive ways to help children heal themselves began at age 17 and led me, two decades later, to my work with flower remedies. Along the way, I became a special education teacher and a Waldorf education teacher and I used Bach Flower Remedies and Perelandra flower essences. However, when I discovered the anthroposophically based Flower Essence Society and their work in California, I found the answer to my quest.

CS: 4. Can you talk a bit about your kids and your use with flower remedies with you and your family.
LB: My daughters were extremely sensitive as children and flower essences were, and still are, a constant in their lives, as well as mine. A specialized flower remedy has accompanied them over each "threshold" they have crossed, whether academic (grade school through graduate school) or emotional/social. Flower essences have helped them, now ages 26 and 22, to strengthen and sheathe themselves, while simultaneously allowing them to retain their glorious innate gifts of empathetic awareness and sensitivity.

CS: 5. Are there some other things that you like to suggest to do in conjunction with the flower remedies? (meditation or reiki or something?)
LB: Flower essences help us to connect to ourselves and Nature, so the best "environment" that we can provide for this healing work, for ourselves and/or our children, is a safe and loving space and quiet, calm time, along with time in Nature, and any other health-giving practices. In addition, I like to ask my clients to engage in some ongoing creative activity, such as journaling, visual journaling, or an art for that they enjoy, which encourages them to express themselves and may also, hopefully, profice a kind of "mirror" for their growth.
CS: It's so interesting that you say that because I innately wanted to write down what I was feeling, my thoughts in a simple way so that I could remember the changes or shifts that were taking place for me.

CS: 6. I like to ask people to share one of their favorite recipes - I have found that when you trust someone you like to eat alike :)
LB: My absolute simplest, but tried and true, favorite healthy, anytime snack, pick me up, and palate cleanser that went into my girls school lunches, on road trips, to potlucks, and is a fun breakfast staple: "Cinnamon Apples"! I cut up tart, organic apples (I prefer granny smith or gala) into slices and festively arrange them on a pretty plate, then sprinkle them with cinnamon. That's it. And if I am over-zealous with my cinnamon apple offering, I use the uneaten slices to make applesauce!
CS: (I think I should share my Apple Tea recipe with Linda! right!?

If you want to contact Linda Beal visit her website: Inner Garden - Flower Essence Therapy all of her contact information is listed on the website and read more about her transforming work. I just can't say enough about how it has helped our family, on a very profound level. All of us have benefited from her work. I am so excited to keep an ongoing openness and awareness as my friendship with Linda continues.

Svenskt Tenn

old photo from our home w/ Josef Frank shoji screen

Any trip to Stockholm deserves a stop at Svenskt Tenn. You won't get bowled over by crazy interior design, but it will create a major shift in what you see in interior design from that day forward. Luckily there is a story in T Magazine this week about Josef Frank, the 1940's print maker/furniture designer who made a name for himself, as powerful today as it was back then. You can walk into one of the most elegant Stockholm urban apartment (of the wealthy set) and find his unique take on interior design.

this could almost be a photo of my sisters living room - Hi Linda!

Here is a link to the story in T Magazine.

It's unfortunate but in the last ten years there have been a few American companies who tried to knock-off the prints - Anthropoogie comes to mind, the last time I was in Stockholm I was talking to the Director of Exports and he was pretty darn furious about this blatant copy. It's my impression that innovative Swede's would never imagine an exact rip-off such as this, it's just not in their dna - so watch out for the UNoriginal.

very interesting :: are you gluten intolerant or is it just poison?

This is what you may have been thinking - Why am I suddenly allergic to gluten when I have been eating all of my life, well this might just be the more correct answer. At the very least it deserves some press, some research and some good old consumer awareness.

The name of the article is Maybe You are Not Gluten Intolerant, Maybe You are Just POISON Intolerant :: the link to the article is here and it really makes you think about the origins of this wave of people who are gluten intolerant. I certainly know that every one of my friends that went off gluten one hundred percent felt better, had more energy and didn't have side effects. When they came back on gluten they were more aware of the problem and while they possibly didn't make the connection to poison, they came back on gluten aware that the needed to eat organic.

I hope this is helpful to everyone!

Cornucopia Institute :: Choosing Organic over Non-Ogranic produce

The Cornucopia Institute released a report today making the compelling case for protecting children’s health and development by choosing organic foods over their conventional, chemically grown and produced counterparts. I have yet to read the full report and while I like to know the facts it's like preaching to the choir to me... I mean, it just seems like the right thing to do, who wants to eat on and in their food, something that is un-natural.

Just in case you have some people you have to convince, here is the full report!

go for it - eat ORGANIC!

I thought that I knew all the things I need to avoid but some of these are points were surprising to me... it's always nice to stay on top of these things and the Environmental Working Group is always my destination for the facts - be it in my personal care products and sunscreens, to checking which foods are pesticide laden (and which ones are maybe okay to buy non organic).

Travel :: Trip to Thomas Jeffersons - Monticello

During our kids April school vacation we didn't really have any plans, I didn't want them to just hang around at home and wanted to find something for them to look forward to during their week off. We've been to Washington DC a few times (you can see one of our trips here), so I wanted to try to do something more planned and structured and DC is just far away enough that it's a good car trip - but not crazy. So while this was a good place to keep as our home base for our three day trip - we didn't do much here but eat, sleep and a quick car-sightseeing tour ("oh look! there's the Washington Monument", "quick over there... Lincoln memorial...") as we pulled out of town.

Our main attraction was to see Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, I had read so much about it and I knew of his fantastic garden and I knew this was a perfect time to go with all of the tree's in bloom and it was.. the drive is about 2.5 hours from DC to Monticello, pretty stop-and-go through small towns which was really nice - instead of freeways. We were going slow enough to look at all the blooms, the farms and to take it easy and stop when we wanted to take a break.

We arrived in the morning at about 10 when they opened, which I think was a good idea. It was a weekday, our Spring break falls at the end of April so we usually miss any crowds, which is lucky. However if you wanted to take a tour of his home, which is a guided tour, they were already quoting 3pm, but we were only interested in the Garden Tour, which is open to anyone who is touring Monticello. When you arrive there is a 15 minute movie about TJ that will make anyone an instant fan and knowledgeable enough to have a few facts in your mind while touring.

First of all I have to say that Thomas Jefferson was one of my favorite presidents. I love to learn whatever I can about him so this was really a treat for me, I was just dragging the kids along - haha they loved it too! We had a fantastic time and there is just enough to make it interesting and not overwhelming. The garden tour was filled with just the sort of facts that I love to know... like this one, TJ espoused that if you plant a thimble of salad seeds every Monday you will always have the perfect amount. He always planted two rows of 'food' in his garden and then a row of something bitter to keep the bugs away. He was crazy about Kale, he knew that the ginkgo trees were beneficial for the soil and was always resist drought. He planted China berry trees at the perimeter of his property, these berries are a natural insect repellant, he has a ring of these trees that surround the communal area of his property. I think we were lucky to have the kind of tour guide that I love - she was filled with interesting facts about Thomas Jefferson and all of his gardening and architectural know-how.

In the middle of the garden stands a 'observatory' just at the edge of the hill and overlooking the entire valley. It's not only a gorgeous look out, but when you stand in the middle of the open-air room you can feel the stillness of the energy - it's amazing! TJ was obsessed about being the first to harvest the bounty of his garden, so much so that he built a micro-climate on the side of the hill so that he could plant early reaping the benefits before some had even planted! (they spent three years digging out the side of the mountaintop so that there would be a perfect spot for his garden). Most beautiful is the fact that he kept detailed drawings and notes on all of his plantings so that Monticello stands today almost exactly as it was when he lived there almost two hundred years ago.

I will never forget this visit and it leaves me wanting to know more! I bought seeds from his garden which they sell in the visitors gift shop.

daily green smoothie

A few months back I told you about a cleanse that I did with my friend Rebecca Briggs, she has a great blog called hOMnaturale. Her cleanse system is amazing and encompasses her vast knowledge on food, yoga, meditation, healing and loads of other wonderful things. Since my cleanse with her I have been making green smothies (along with my daily elixir which I shared with you in a blog a few months ago - link here). While the elixir is a more simple tall glass of freshness, I have also gotten into the routine of a green smothie each day and I am crazy about them.

If I do say so myself I think mine are pretty good (thanks to Rebecca) and I don't even have a Vitamix, I am just doing it with a plain old, high powered, blender! They taste amazing and it's nice during the winter (because they are not really cold) to replenish and drink fluids. Depending on what's going on in our community and family I will add a dropper full of Astragalus if my immune system needs a boost or if my nerves feel jumpy and unsettled I add a dropper of Magnesium.. whatever your 'thing' is.. you can add to your smoothie and give it an even bigger boost.

Some of my favorite ingredients are (all organic) : almond milk, coconut water, extra virgin coconut oil, Turmeric, cashew butter, hulled hemp seeds, green apples, pears, dates, spearmint (SO good!) etc... I think I could go on forever. But here is one of my favorite recipes, I really just make what is in my fridge - you will figure out what works for you and what doesn't but it's a good idea to have a base of a non-dairy milk, water, nut butter, powder (like hemp, maca etc.) green leaf (baby spinach, romaine, kale...), lemon... and then change things up from there...

Today I made this (all organic ingredients):

2 cups arugula
1 cup almond milk
1 cup filtered water (coconut water)
1/2 small lemon (with or without peel)
1 Tbsp cashew butter
1 tsp kava powder
1 tsp maca powder
pinch of Himalayan salt
a 1" piece of ginger (peeled and sliced into pieces)
1 Tbsp coconut oil
3 pitted dates

blend until it's pretty smooth - it takes a bit for my blender. I didn't add mint today but usually I do - SO good! This makes enough for me to have a glass, share a glass with my husband, maybe the kids too and then I put the leftover in jar with a lid and drink that later in the day (maybe in the car when I'm driving the kids around).

Some people have a hard time drinking a green smoothie (I CRAVE them so not a problem there) but if you do try drinking with a straw, I think that makes it easier?

YUM!

Juice Cleanse :: final

We finished off the juice cleanse, it was a 7-day cleanse, on days one and two we eased into it with green smoothies and then eased out the same way. It was not difficult and I felt better than I ever through the whole thing! Before I went into this I was having lots of allergy problems, with dust and seasonal allergies. I realized a few days after the cleanse was over that I didn't have those symptoms anymore, no more sneezing and waking up with watery eyes. And even now a week later they are still gone... For this alone the juice cleanse was amazing. I also lost quite a few pounds, not sure how many, but I feel much lighter - the tire around my waist is almost gone.

The things that have stuck with me after the cleanse are the juicing techniques I learned from Rebecca. I have been using them to make various smoothies, sauces with dinner, and lots of green dips. I would love to share some recipes but at this point I am just making something up new each time. I will say that cashew butter has been a big part, it makes everything lovely! Rebecca gave us a whole litany of recipes for smoothies all of which are delicious.

I think the juice cleanse can have the results of anything you are looking for, digestive problems, cleaning out your colon, starting you on a path to a good diet, allergies.. there are a whole range of problems that can but solved with a juice cleanse. It gave me so much energy, I got so much done, I was focused and strong throughout. My taste buds are more in tune with what I want to be eating and my sense of smell just became so strong and aware. Most of all if it's something you have always wanted to do, just do it! It doesn't take any preparation and it will impact your life in so many ways!

elixirs & co - you will love these scents with a purpose!

A few years back when I was in Paris I picked up the Elixirs & Co Présence(s) perfume n1 and it is my constant companion. It gives me a lift when I need it - since it's a perfume it stays with me for longer than the usual oils I wear. These Elixirs offer not only a lift of the olfactory but they are also infused to fully harness the benefits of the 38 flower remedies discovered by Dr Bach, through a range of natural and innovative scents. These essences are created by Gérard Wolf in France, a specialist in Bach flower remedies. These essences help to re-balance our emotional state, resulting in a better ability for our body to stay healthy.

this is one of the two perfumes no.1 and no.2

I love the Bach Flower remedies (The remedies, not these perfumes) I have talked about them many times here on my blog. I have used them for pregnancy, childbirth, for my babies up through kids, and breastfeeding just to name a few. Recently I have used Bach Flower remedies to help my husband get through a dark period (he didn't know I was giving them to him each day in glasses of water - I felt a bit like a water maid but it certainly was worth it!) I gave him Sweet Chestnut, and it was a tremendous benefit. I have used the Bachs Rescue remedy for the kids, when traveling I never forget it - it's good for weird things that come up, wipe-outs and airplane travel. With breastfeeding it helps your milk to come in and for childbirth, it just helps you cope through the whole thing, stay alert and on top of things.

eau de toilet

So you can imagine when I found an everyday perfume that uses the essences of the Bach flowers I was so happy! I am glad that they offer your choice of perfume, toilet water or essential oils.

Try them all and see what works for you! If you have any questions on the scents please don't hesitate to ask me. I wish that I had testers I could hand out to everyone - I could scent your order with anything you wish... just tell me!

NYT :: A Cure for the Allergy Epedemic?

This was a great article in the NYT last Sunday. Maybe not new news for some of you but it crystallizes the idea of farm living and beneficial microbes. At least it gave some of my ideas a good base to run on and it's possible when I see that raw milk in the grocery store next time I am probably going to give it a try. My sister has been all over this idea for years now, I remember when her girls were doing horse shows and she used to tell me to come along when I was pregnant and when my son was a baby because it was good for him to be in the barn and around the animals, even when he was in my belly - most importantly when he was in my belly!

Some of the ideas brought out in the article were the fact that Amish children have a much lower rate of allergies than any other group of children, where allergies are increasing in children in cities and rural areas the Amish children are not being affected. It's the daily routine of these people that provides an abundance of microbes, it's milking the cows, collecting the chicken eggs, tending the pigs, etc.. that feed their bodies system so that when they encounter allergens in the future they have an immunity.

I also found it very interesting that these same microbes are in their homes too (duh). Which is all part of living on the farm and the benefits of the farm air they breathe. There is evidence that has emerged that asthma is further exacerbated by dust in the home and if a home can better keep up with the dust and regular cleaning kids have less asthma attacks (listen to NPR article on the subject here).

But back to allergies - the answer lies... in the cow shed! The author of the piece, Moises Velasquez-Manoff (a science writer and the author of "An Epidemic of Absence") offers that maybe it's possible to use these microbes to come up with a solution for allergies -- the problem... is that there is such an array of microbes found on a farm, in the cow shed, and the solution lies in that abundant array. It is also suggested that raw milk (unpasteurized) that the Amish drink also carries microbes which are beneficial.

It's a VERY good article... read on...

another remodelista favorite! the summer house of simon doonan + jonathan adler

This is a home I KNEW I wanted to see.... the landscape architecture is amazing and when you look at the before and after you KNOW this took some serious vision! It was done by Vickie Cardaro (her company is called: Buttercup Design Group) I love how it all looks so wild, natural and unkept.. (well I assume as it grows it will get a bit more wild!)

I am in love with these circular cement walkway stones. It would all look too haphazard without them and it somehow pulls it all together. How simple is THAT!

Love that you can't even see the house from the front entrance!

Fantastic pool! and incredibly simple planters (why do I keep planting Geraniums!?)

just getting started... holiday gift guide 2012

One of my favorite jobs as a blogger is to write HOLIDAY shopping guides, and to get into the mood I took a look at last years and  W o W  it was good! You can see it by clicking here I did a really good job of finding some unique items... *blush* They are timeless so take a look!

This year with the proliferation of handmade it's become even easier AND harder... to find those unique items. But I have to say, there are a couple of big retailers that did a great job of looking out for unique items and I have to say that my favorite is West Elm.. I'm not sure what happened this last year with West Elm but as I understand it a certain 'someone' took charge and gave it a little change UP. So if you think you know West Elm, take a look now.. They have a terrific West Elm Market for the holidays and I think it's terrific! These are a few of my favorites:

This hose is what I asked Santa for this year! (orange please!)

Swedish sea salt soap - sound nice right!?

just the idea of this seems nice!

Love these... and at $14 PERFECT!
bento boxes for kids lunches

habachi! better than a grill.. WAY better!

cotton napkins.. nice and you can choose your colors! (AND monogram is available!)

bakeware.. my mom just told me that it's not good to use dark color bakeware.. who knew!?
Just to get you started... looking back it's not such a gift list but anyway... love this stuff!

And while you are at West Elm take a look at their furniture and accessories collections.. NICE! (and I promise you I don't work for West Elm and I'm NOT getting a sofa for this blog! :)

happy shopping!
