iPad :: apps and general....
Many people have asked me about the iPad and any suggestions that I may have and yes, I have a few good 'ideas'. I think that the first thing, possibly even before buying the iPad, that needs to be laid down is that the iPad is only used as an educational tool. In our house we leave the games on the iPhones and the iPad only has educational apps on it. At this time the kids don't even think of playing games on the iPad, it's only used for education. I also ask them to switch the iPad to airplane mode while they are on it so that it is not emitting a signal or looking for a signal.
Our School PTO purchased iPads for the classrooms and they passed out this list of apps that we have found very helpful. I wasn't sold on the idea of the iPads at school but so far the experiment has been very positive and in our home since we had the ABC's problem that we talked about a few weeks ago with our kindergartner, we have purchased an iPad and she has been using the ABC apps with great success, she really loves to work on it.

That's quite a list. Thanks for sharing.
that is a great list for future reference!
And by the way, what a lucky school - our public school out here in california does not even have the budget for 1 IPAD for the entire school. :(
guess what ter! this IS a public school. I am part of the PTO and we do a bunch of fundraising and grant writing to get these iPads. I think it's amazing as well to have these iPads in school and it was certainly a paradigm shift for some of the teachers. But it has really turned out to be a good learning tool so far. I think it's wonderful to be a part of the PTO and I don't see any of the stigma that it attached to it at least at our school, it's all about raising money for the kids!
Wow! That looks like a very comprehensive list; thanks for sharing!
Dear Mom, so now i would like to ask you for the perfect list for big kids like me. I have an ipad and it is getting dusty on the table. Where should I start ? Amazon I guess is one for books....

Yes I would love so e aps for me.
We choose to not have the kids on anything computer until they are much older.
I fear that people plug their kids in so much that so many can't just be.
Anyhow some grown up aps please

Your idea to distinguish the iPad for educational use only is an interesting idea. I think it will work for a while anyway…
Thank you for sharing this with us! I'm a fan of family-friendly apps that help my kids, and me as well. By the way, if it's alright, I'd like to recommend one of my current favorite apps, Intuition. Tagged as mom's personal assistant, it's a task management app that has many features designed to help us moms. It's really easy to use and it looks cute, too. Plus, it's free! You can check it out on http://www.iconapps.com/product.htm
I only wish my son's school allowed for iPad in class for the Students to use for notetaking etc....
It will be a tool to be competitive in the future.
Now, I don't think this should happen until High School.
When purchasing iPads for schools, are there any data costs, ongoing costs, upgrade costs, etc? Are the apps mentioned free? If not, does the app have to be purchased for each iPad? How many iPads per classroom were purchased? This sounds very cool!
That's a lot of questions! I have to say, apple worked very closely with our school so that we got the correct equipment, we bought 24 so that each child has an iPad. I think that we just pay for the one download, and then sync all iPads. Some of the apps cost $1.99 or so... But most are free. And just as an update, our kids still use our iPad for educational purposes and not for games. I think it has tondo with them using the iPads at school!
Wow! This list is exactly what I have been looking for! We are thinking about buying an ipad for homeschool use and was having a hard time finding educational apps! Thanks!
Here is another amazing list that i have found...if anyone is interested.
